Biography
Dr. Umlas was born in Detroit and raised in the Boston area. He graduated from Belmont Hill School, then Harvard College, where he majored in Biology. He was a member of the varsity track team and awarded the Unsung Hero Award in his senior year. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and then completed his ophthalmology residency at Tufts New England Eye Center in 1995.
After training, Dr. Umlas started in private practice general ophthalmology at Mount Auburn Hospital. He then pursued fellowship training in glaucoma under Michael A. Kass, M.D. at Washington University in St. Louis. He was a participant in the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study.
After returning from St. Louis, Dr. Umlas joined Lexington Eye Associates in 1999 as a glaucoma specialist. He was board certified in Ophthalmology in 1997 and recertified in 2007. His interests include general ophthlmology, cataract surgery, complex cataract surgery in patients with co-morbid conditions, and the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of the glaucomas. Dr. Umlas was recognized in 2004 by Boston Magazine in their “Best Doctors” issue.
Dr. Umlas’ real passions are his family and medical mission work in ophthalmology. During his senior year in medical school he volunteered at the Indian Health Service in Winslow, Arizona. As a senior ophthalmology resident at Tufts, he began a long association with ASAPROSAR (Salvadoran Association for Rural Health), where he participates in an annual medical/surgical eye campaign. In 2010, he marked his 15th campaign in El Salvador. He also volunteers locally in Framingham for patients who have limited access to health care. Dr. Umlas is fluent in Spanish.
